About the Presidential Climate Commission

The Presidential Climate Commission is an independent, multistakeholder body established by President Cyril Ramaphosa. Our purpose is to oversee and facilitate a just and equitable transition towards a low-emissions and climate-resilient economy.

Governance

The Presidential Climate Commission is chaired by the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa. Its deputy chair is former environmental affairs and tourism minister Valli Moosa. The commission comprises government ministers and 22 commissioners that represent diverse perspectives. The commission meets on a quarterly basis; ad hoc working groups on various thematic areas meet more frequently.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is the Chairperson for the Presidential Climate Commission, a role which commenced in December 2020.

Secretariat

A full time Secretariat has been appointed to support the work of the Commission. The Secretariat is led by the Executive Director, Dr Crispian Olver. Government departments and social partners have seconded staff and provided logistical support for the Secretariat. The Secretariat provided logistical support for Commission meetings, and commissions research and policy work to support the main functional areas of the Commissions work relating to a just transition, climate mitigation and adaptation, and climate finance.​
